Varsity Lacrosse - Brentwood vs. Ensworth 2/25

The Brentwood High School varsity lacrosse team opened up the 2010 season last Thursday, with a convincing win against 2009 Division II state runner-up, Ensworth High School. Following a quarterfinal playoff appearance by Brentwood in 2009 and winning the Division II championship in 2008, the 2010 team enters their second season as a Division I contender.

Brentwood controlled the pace of the game Thursday night from start to finish, as Ensworth did not score until late in the game. Brentwood led 7-0 at halftime and 9-0 before Ensworth finally broke through.  Brentwood’s offensive production was led by senior Ben Tarpley who had 5 goals and 2 assists. Several other players contributed with points on offense including; juniors Patrick Gill and AJ Rittler and sophomore Ryan Coll, who each had 1 goal and 1 assist. Also scoring points were Sam Wyatt with 2 assists and Ben Manning, Richard Alter, Peter Raffanti and Jason Springer with 1 goal each.  Coach Catterton was pleased to see all three of the starting attackmen score, as well as the top three mid field lines. The offense controlled offensive play as the combination of Richard Alter, Sam Wyatt and Sam Wudell won 12 of 17 faceoffs.

The story of the day may have been the team play of the defensive unit led by Jacob Fredi, Carson Mayhall and Colin Hart, anchored by the goal keeping of senior Preston Stapp. The defense was simply un- penetrable as Ensworth took very few quality shots, and when they did they were shut down by Stapp. The defense pressured the ball , created turnovers and cleared it up to the offense with precision. Colin Hart led the defense by controlling 10 loose balls, and Stapp finished with 5 saves. Coach Catterton got a good look at his squad as 24 players took the field and contributed to the win.
