Brentwood vs. MBA 3/24/10

Division I rival, MBA came to Crockett Park Wednesday night ready for a battle, and they certainly got one. In the end, the Bruins were licking their wounds, but MBA knew they were in a hard fought game.  It was a very tight game all night with scores of 2-2 at the end of the first quarter, 3-3 at the half and 5-4 at the end of three. The score remained close as Brentwood tied it at 5 before MBA again stretched it to 6-5. The battle continued as MBA scored after a Bruin penalty to move ahead by two. Brentwood needed the ball in order to have a comeback chance and took some defensive risks to create an MBA turnover. MBA took advantage of their aggressive play, and was skilled enough to protect their slim lead and add a little cushion at the end. The final was 9-5 as the Bruins took their first loss of the season.

The key differential in the game was time of possession. MBA won most of the face offs (13 of 18) and loose balls (37 vs. 19). With those two advantages, MBA maintained the ball in the offensive end much longer than did the Bruins, and therefore had more opportunities to take shots (39 vs. 27) and score more often.

Senior Preston Stapp had a season high 17 saves in the losing effort. Points were scored by Sam Wyatt, 2 goals, 1 assist, Ben Tarpley, 2 goals, Patrick Gill 1 goal and Colin Hart 1 assist.

MBA plays in the east side of Division I as Brentwood plays in the west, so the loss doesn’t hurt the Bruins divisional record as they remain 1-0 in the division and 6-1 overall.

Next up is a trip to Memphis to play last year’s Division I runner up Memphis University School, and division II foe Collierville.
