Summer Lacrosse Camps or Leagues

Posted Thursday, April 15, 2010 by Mike Skiera
Each year around this time we typically get asked the same question hundreds of time. Can you recommend a summer lacrosse camp or league my son might benefit from?

The simplest answer to this question is “any camp or league that focuses on building basic lacrosse skills and allows him to have fun playing the game”.   The reality is, that can be different based on the player’s age and skill level. We would recommend you talk to you team coach for specific developmental needs for your specific player.

Typically our high school players, rising sophomores to senior, know how to find specific camps on the internet and are already wired to what they want and where they want to go. For the rising 5th grades thru freshmen that can be more difficult. We would like to make three recommendations to programs in our area that you take a look at.

Brentwood-Franklin Summer Lacrosse League

This is a program that our head lacrosse coach, Chuck Catterton, has run for many years. The program is divided into two age groups. It is designed for boys entering 5th thru 8th grade. It is and instructional summer league which means players focus on a specific skills at each practice then play instructional games. It runs two nights per week (Monday & Thursday) over a six week period (June 21st through July 29th). It’s a great program to build on players skills and have fun playing lacrosse over the summer.

More information (flyer) can be found on our website (click on “Home” then “Camps”). You will find a registration form (under “Teams” then “Forms”) that you can download and submit by June 7th or contact Coach Catterton (information provide on the flyer).

Lightning Lacrosse – Duke Lacrosse Camp

For the second consecutive year we are pleased to provide a lacrosse day camp (9:00 to 3:00 for four days) that is run by the Duke University coaching staff and former players plus local area coaches. It was well attended last year.

This camp is designed for boys ages 8 thru 16. It is broken down into three division based on age and skill. They work on all stick skills plus learn offensive, defensive and goalie skills. They will also be instructed in game situation as well. It truly is a good camp for the value.

It will run four days from June 14-17 in Brentwood at Crockett Park. You can find more information on our website (click “Home” and “Camps) or go to www.lightninglacrosse.com.

MBA Summer League

A long running fun summer league is the MBA Summer Lacrosse League. They have division for every age group from 5th grade thru men’s division. It is simply a fun summer league where boys can play and have fun. See MBAs website for more details regarding dates and cost.
There you have it … Three recommendations for of several opportunities that exist out there to help boys build their lacrosse skills. Please do not hesitate to talk with you specific coach for what he might suggest your son work on over the summer and fall months to improve his game.
